I arrived in Sofia on a rainy day, which limited my activities, but I still managed to visit some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Despite the weather, Sofia’s charm and history shone through.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

My first stop was the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. Its grand golden domes and intricate mosaics were breathtaking, even under the gray skies. The interior was equally impressive, with beautiful frescoes and a serene atmosphere that invited quiet reflection. I spent some time just sitting quietly, soaking in the peaceful ambiance and marveling at the artistry around me.

Saint Sofia Church

Next, I visited the Saint Sofia Church, the second oldest church in Sofia. This ancient basilica, dating back to the 6th century, gave the city its name. The church’s simple yet elegant architecture and its historical significance made it a fascinating stop. I was particularly struck by the ancient tombstones displayed in the crypt, which offered a tangible connection to the past.

National Assembly Square

I then made my way to the National Assembly Square, where the impressive National Assembly building stands. The square is a hub of political activity and a great place to observe the hustle and bustle of the city. The statue of Tsar Alexander II, known as the “Tsar Liberator,” adds a touch of history to the square. I took a moment to appreciate the significance of this place, imagining the many important decisions that have been made here.

Ivan Vazov National Theatre

Despite the rain, I couldn’t miss the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, a stunning example of Neoclassical architecture. The theatre’s grand facade and beautifully landscaped gardens were a delight to see. It’s one of the most important cultural institutions in Bulgaria, hosting numerous performances throughout the year. I wished I had more time to catch a show, but just being there and imagining the performances was thrilling.

Vitosha Boulevard

For a change of pace, I strolled down Vitosha Boulevard, Sofia’s main commercial street. Lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants, it was the perfect place to grab a coffee and do some people-watching. I found a cozy cafe and enjoyed a warm drink while watching the world go by. The vibrant atmosphere of Vitosha Boulevard was a highlight of my day, and I even picked up a few souvenirs from the local shops.

The Rotunda of Saint George

One of the oldest buildings in Sofia, the Rotunda of Saint George, was next on my list. This red brick church, dating back to the 4th century, is tucked away in a courtyard behind the Sheraton Hotel. Its ancient frescoes and peaceful ambiance made it a memorable visit. I was amazed by the contrast between the ancient rotunda and the modern buildings surrounding it, a true testament to Sofia’s layered history.

Sofia Central Mineral Baths

My final stop was the Sofia Central Mineral Baths, a beautiful building with a rich history. Although the baths are no longer in operation, the building now houses the Sofia History Museum. The architecture and the mineral springs outside were fascinating to see. I spent some time exploring the museum, learning about Sofia’s history and the significance of the mineral baths.

Despite the rain, Sofia’s rich history and vibrant culture made my visit unforgettable. The city’s blend of ancient and modern, along with its welcoming atmosphere, left a lasting impression on me. After the Tour

After my day of sightseeing, I took a bus to Bucharest, Romania, which was a 7-hour trip. The journey was comfortable, and I used the time to reflect on my experiences in Sofia and plan my next adventure.
