My Journey from Tirana to Thessaloniki and Beyond
Traveling is a tapestry of moments, both planned and spontaneous, that stitch together unforgettable memories.

The Early Start
My journey began in Tirana, Albania. After checking out of the hostel at the unholy hour of 1:00 am, I hopped into a taxi bound for Tirana East Bus Terminal, spending 10 Euros. By 1:00 pm, I found myself in Thessaloniki, Greece, ready to embrace a new destination.
JetPack Hostel – A Warm Welcome
JetPack Hostel, located an 18-minute walk from the bus terminal, offered more than just a place to rest. Upon arrival, Vince, a friendly traveler volunteering at the hostel, greeted me with kindness and warmth. The owner, equally delightful, made me feel right at home. JetPack Hostel’s highlights included:
- Free coffee every morning—a treat for caffeine enthusiasts.
- A spacious room and bed, ensuring a comfortable stay.
- A washroom equipped with a bidet (not always easy to find in hostels!).
- Proximity to the coast and shops, making exploration effortless.

Places I Visited
Thessaloniki is a city steeped in history, culture, and charm. Here are some must-see attractions I visited:
- White Tower of Thessaloniki: A striking historical monument and museum by the coast, offering panoramic views from its top.
- Aristotelous Square: The beating heart of the city, lined with cafes and shops, perfect for people-watching and relaxing.
- Rotunda: A fascinating circular building with a history dating back to Roman times, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Church of Agios Dimitrios: A magnificent Byzantine church dedicated to the patron saint of Thessaloniki.
- Ano Poli (Upper Town): Wander through cobblestone streets, discover traditional houses, and enjoy stunning views of the city below.
I unpacked, set out to explore these gems, and embraced Thessaloniki’s vibrant spirit.

Rainy Day Decisions
After a whirlwind day, I retired early and allowed myself a slower pace the next morning. By afternoon, rain dampened my plans, so I decided to shop for souvenirs—a practical and enjoyable way to spend the time.

An Unplanned Delight
Returning to the hostel at 10:00 pm, I crossed paths with fellow travelers who invited me to join them for drinks. Initially planning to stay for only two hours (my bus to Sofia was scheduled for 1:00 am), I found myself immersed in meaningful conversations about politics, personal stories, and life itself. Eventually, I decided to cancel my late-night bus and booked a more convenient trip for 9:30 am the following day. Sometimes, the best moments are unplanned.

Journey to Sofia
I embarked on a six-hour bus ride to Sofia, Bulgaria, with the added excitement of having a lady driver—a first-time experience for me and truly refreshing.

Expenses Breakdown
Traveling teaches you to budget and prioritize. Here’s a summary of my expenses:
- Hostel: 38 Euros
- Food: 20 Euros
- Thessaloniki to Sofia Bus: 30 Euros
- Souvenirs: 50 Euros
- Other Expenses: 20 Euros
Total: 158 Euros
This trip reaffirmed that travel is not just about the destinations but also the people you meet and the spontaneity you embrace. Thessaloniki gifted me memories, friendships, and stories to carry forward on my journey.
